Description
Alfagrog Biological Filter Media
What is Alfagrog?
Alfagrog is a lightweight, strong, and inert porous ceramic material. Its high surface area makes it an ideal option for the colonization of microorganisms in biological filtration systems, leading to cleaner water. Perfect for pond filtration, coldwater, tropical and marine reef filters.
Benefits of Alfagrog over other filter media:
Extremely high surface area
Highly porous
Inert, pH neutral
Lightweight
Available worldwide
Economical
A variety of grade sizes available: 25mm / 40mm
The Alfagrog range of porous ceramic filter media is produced under controlled conditions in Staffordshire, UK.
Carefully selected clays and raw materials are quickly sintered at high temperatures to create a foamed ceramic structure with pores. This material is then crushed and sieved to achieve a suitable particle size.
Alfagrog comes in various sizes, providing users with optimal media surface areas for different water flow rates.
The manufacturing process guarantees that no harmful substances are included, ensuring the health of both fish and plants. The material is pH neutral and suitable for use in both freshwater and marine environments.
Why is Alfagrog so effective?
To achieve effective biological filtration, it's essential to select media that offers the maximum surface area. This encourages beneficial bacteria to thrive and effectively removes waste from the water. Alfagrog stands out due to its exceptionally high surface area when compared to other filter media available on the market.
According to the chart below, theoretically, around 20 times the volume of foam would be needed to achieve the same filtration level as Alfagrog E40, and nearly 40 times the volume for Alfagrog E25. This means that a smaller filtration unit can be utilized with Alfagrog to deliver the same results as a much larger unit filled with inferior, and often more costly, filter media.
Other applications
Alfagrog can serve as decorative gravel for aquariums, aid in aquarium landscaping, and be utilized in various other applications. Larger pieces can function as a replacement for live rock.
